Powered by Yahoo Upcoming, OmniGrowl can notify you of public events in your area in the following categories:

You can choose how far out to look both in terms of distance and date range. Like the concert notifications, you can choose whether the music category must match artists in iTunes.
In addition to public events, OmniGrowl can notify you of the events that you or your friends are interested in or going to. You can designate those events on the Upcoming site, and can specify which friends you want to include. OmniGrowl will notify you of your own events (and/or your friends events) just like they were iCal events, without you needing to enter them into iCal (or subscribe to Upcoming’s calendar feed).
Setting up Upcoming Events
Due to limitations imposed by Yahoo, to use Upcoming Events, you need to register a Yahoo account if you don’t have one. Then you need to connect it to Upcoming, generate an API key, and authenticate that key with your account. OmniGrowl will walk you through this one-time process, which should take no more than a couple of minutes.
