TEST and iCal notifications. (September 20, 2017, 07:08:29 AM) quote
Hi,
I have the latest version of OmniGrowl, OS X is 10.7.5. I somehow can't figure out how the test things work. Let's begin with iCal notifications. I have those enabled - all of them iCal-related (as well as Address Book-related). I have a number of upcoming events but I don't see any notifications. I'm not sure I understand this app quite well, there're no any in-depth video tutorials to gain a visual clarification of how all this is supposed to work. Then, let's talk about "TEST" pref pane. I think I get it correctly making assumption that as you press any button then the corresponding notifications should pop up and I configured Growl for OmniGrowl for the kinds of notifications I want to receive. I pressed Logs, Ambient (set to update every 10 min) just for common knowledge, I don't read their news nor am I aware what Ambient is. Regardless, when I press the button the app gets frozen and unresponsive.
Could you please render step by step instructions and examples - clear and unambiguous.
Thanks.

Hi. Nice to see someone still on OS X 10.7!

Let me ask what may be a silly question first: do you have Growl (in addition to OmniGrowl) installed?

Sorry, missed that. Thanks.

First, all the documentation is available thru the help menu. There's both a general info section and an advanced info section.

Second, there are some services that no longer work, unfortunately. Ambient News now appears to be one of them. Thanks for reporting that. At least it's not working at the moment from Test tab. I've seen it work quite recently in normal use, so maybe it's a temporary service issue. (Anyway, will look into it.)

All calendar & reminder notifications should work, on any OS version from 10.4 up thru 10.12. I personally use it daily on 10.12 for that and other notifications. I can't specifically test 10.7 anymore.

1. In iCal, create an event that starts within the next 60 minutes in iCal. (Make sure it's on a calendar that is not disabled, if "ignore disabled calendars" is enabled, and not in the exclusions list if you've made any. Both configured from the Personal tab. Note closing the side pane after editing the exclusions can take some time while OG resets calendars.)

2. Then go to the Test tab and click the "Cache" button. Wait until you get the notification that caches have been cleared.

3. Then from the pull down menu, select "60 minute event"

Do you get the notification now for the event you just created?

At 08:00 AM I created an event in iCal to start at 08:30 AM, so it falls within 60 min time-frame.
Made sure that appropriate notifications of OmniGrowl for iCal events/todos etc. are enabled in Growl.
Went to "TEST", clicked "Cache", got the notification about that.
Changed to "60 minutes event" from the dropdown. Nothing happened.

There a legend written in small letters reading that "some tests can make time to process". Maybe, but how long that time is? How do we know if the tested event is actually up-and-running and not aborted or smth?

Sorry for the delay. Was out of town.

After you did what you did, the notificaiton should have been instantaneous. So there's something odd going on.

First, you haven't by chance _disabled_ "check events & reminders" on the "personal tab" have you? Assuming not,

Please try this:

1. go to help menu > Toggle Debug Mode
2. repeat same steps above (including cache button, then 60 min event)
3. go to help menu > show logs
4. turn off Debug Mode (extra logging)

This is what it should look like:

[9/24/17 6:23:18 PM] to notify: Upcoming event in one hour. mins: 60
[9/24/17 6:23:19 PM] passed click context = iCalE~~5D4F069E-F7BA-4ABF-9023-8E034EBC23F1~~HomePrivate
[9/24/17 6:23:19 PM] Upcoming event in one hour
test omnigrowl
7:00 PM

Probably best to take follow-up to support email. support at woodenbrain dot com

The end of that log shows that there were no events cached. So at least we know it's not a problem with what notifications are set in Growl. It's somehow not finding any events. Seems to me there are only a few possibilities here.

1. the calendar your event is on is not enabled in iCal (checked)
2. the calendar is in the exclusions list
3. the option to check events & reminders in not enabled in OmniGrowl

Could you please attach (or better send by email), screen shots of iCal with the sidebar showing the calendars and the event, and screenshots of the personal tab with the exclusions side pane?

I send two messages to support some 2 weeks ago by the same title (since the form doesn't allow to pin more than one file) supplemented with screenshot attachments with every screenshot containing capture of the UI elements of OmniGrowl prefs you wished to have a look at.
