Newbie has some questions about OmniGrowl (January 15, 2012, 11:50:06 AM) quote
Okay...

Been rather happy with Omnigrowl and as such, I registered my copy today.

Now I have a few questions....

1. What are these small keywords that keep popping up as notifications? I think they are related to AMBIENT NEWS which I had no idea what it was, but I turned it on anyway. It keeps flashing words like CHINA, IRAN, CRUISE, SHIP. These seem to be words related to current news stories. Why is this function necessary? Would like to know before I turn it off.

2. The notifications seem to appear and disappear too quickly. If you don't catch them as soon as they pop up, they are gone. How do you adjust the notification window delay so all notifications stay up for at least a minute? From what I can gather, it seems to be a setting you need to make in GROWL. Is it under DISPLAY -> DURATION? The maximum seems to be 10 seconds, which I still don't think is long enough if one's eyes are on something else.

3. How quickly does WBC update OmniGrowl when GROWL updates? I read a few posts about incompatibilities with updates so I am hoping the team is on top of any potential GROWL updates.

That's it for now. Look forward to a response.

Hi... Thanks for your questions.

1. Yes, those are Ambient news. The idea is to get a quick sense of what's "hot" in the day's news. you can turn it off if you don't like it.

2. OG has no control over duration, as you guessed. All settings related to that are made in Growl itself. You can configure OG within Growl, and make any type of notification "stay on screen". However it's either a max duration or stay on screen until you dismiss it. (The default is "application decides" whether to stay on screen -- most don't by default.)

With the mac app store version of Growl (1.3+) you can use the "roll-up" feature to return to the list of notifications that you missed. Also OG does have a command in the menu bar that repeats the last notification.

3. OG is updated when necessary for changes in Growl.
